Distorted Symmetries / Incline Gallery / 2018
Alison Pebworth responds to the unique architecture of this 19th c. mortuary using interchangeable sculptural assemblages for a site-specific installation throughout the twisting ramps of the gallery space.
Drawing upon her own reflections on mortality working with materials she rescues from the San Francisco dump, she relates the contradictions of the sacred and profane as evidenced in the simultaneous adoration and disregard of nature in our trash. Relating the abundance of wasted natural woods to the many idealized facsimiles of nature that flow continuously through the waste stream she builds totems to these disparities, combining new geometric shapes cut from old boards, worn wooden surfaces and vintage nature prints and paintings.
Distorted Symmetries by Alison Pebworth, May/June, 2018.
